Why I Chose Automotive Freelance Writing

There are not many writers out there who specialize in the B2B automotive market. I’m not sure why, there just isn’t. I’ve had other writers ask me ‘…why not Saas, or health & wellness, or financial?’

Fair question…

I had a writing mentor long ago tell me when starting out to pick an industry I knew well. This was supposed to set me up as an expert and a writer that understood their customer better than a generalist or someone who writes for anyone and any market. Plus…I had no direct experience with those other markets that are flooded with writers now.

I’ll admit I was worried this would lock me in and keep me from being able to find enough clients to build my business. Especially when other experts were saying DON’T niche down…write for everyone! Besides, how many companies would need a freelance writer in this space?

Turns out…quite a lot.

You see, I do have years of experience working in dealerships, first in the Service Department as a cashier in college and then as an F&I manager. Add to that a couple of decades selling B2B solutions to dealers, and it simply made sense to lean into helping companies sell into the market I already knew with focused copy & content to increase lead generation and build their brand.

My clients have put a high value on not having to waste precious time educating a me on the unique market of auto dealers…how they think, what messages and tone resonate with them, etc.

That doesn’t mean I won’t help in another niche market. I did some work for a local realtor for web copy that was very successful for the relocation department. I have written educational materials for a state association. Variety is always good to keep things fresh and it can help writers step out of their comfort zone to learn about new markets.

Would I ever add a niche? Maybe. I’m considering adding a couple that are industries I’ve sold to in the past (credit unions, banks, auto insurers). But I think automotive will always be my foundation.
